2009 Theme

The theme for ODCSSS 2009 "Technologies for bridging the digital-physical divide: sensing the environment". Each ODCSSS student is engaged in a research project with a faculty member and mentor which provides them an opportunity to experience research. The selection of interns is highly competitive but we encourage anyone interested in research who is eligible to apply.

Objectives

The primary goal of this school is to afford exceptional undergraduate students the opportunity to participate and contribute to exciting yet challenging research projects at leading research facilities and inspire them to go on to undertake research careers. Applicants apply online and are selected based on their CV, motivations and references and they will be distributed to the projects according to their preferences. Students who are offered an internship attend a number of events during the summer (kick off day, midterm research day, final research day etc.) and are expected to submit a final report, final poster and present during the course of the internship. They are also expected to participate in industrial and other site visits. There are a number of social events arranged which are after hours and are optional but we strongly encourage all participants to attend.  Specifically, we aim:

1. To afford undergraduate interns the opportunity to undertake research in a distributed yet cooperative research environment;

2. To introduce our research to undergraduates through exciting real-world applications that will actually be deployed, used or incorporated into ongoing research projects;

3. To expose students to novel research problems, cross-cutting research exploration, specialised state of the art equipment and inter-discipliniary research expertise;

4. To provide a foundation of basic research skills to the undergraduate interns which will aid them in transforming their research internship experience into a long term plan for final year research or subsequent research career options;

5. To stimulate enrolment in graduate studies through involvement of talented undergraduate students in scientific investigation under mentorship of researchers and prepare scholars for graduate studies;

6. To raise awareness and understanding of the areas defined as themes in Odysseus;

7. To develop showcase exemplars that will allow us to tell the story of our research to the wider lay community.
