Universal Forensic File Viewer

Odysseus:
2010

This project will entail the building of a user interface for exploring a computer image. The computer image is an exact copy of a computer file system and is used in cybercrime investigations to extract evidence and carry out analysis. The user interface will show all the major information of particular files and allow the user to access and explore the file system and access all data in it.

The project will use an existing MFT parser software which can open and traverse an NTFS file image. However the software is command line based and does not allow the user to interact with the computer image. All the user can do at the moment, is to access the files in the file image and extract them to the local file system. The interface should keep this functionality but should also allow the user to open the file in run-time to see the file content.

The program is a part of a large project that will guide the user to the specific parts of the file system where evidence is likely to be stored.

In this project the student will construct the interface and implement it in such a way as to resolve some of the problems of the existing interfaces.
The implementation will be done in JAVA. The student should be comfortable in reading and manipulating hexadecimal data and have an interest in interface construction and computer forensics
