Portable System to Support Healthy Diet

Overview

Lately one of the major problem in the developed countries is people's diet which includes food with high levels of fat, sugar, cholesterol and calories. As a direct result cardio-vasculary diseases affect many individuals with significant economic and social consequences in the whole society. This is mostly as a result of a stressful life, with little time to remember select and consume healthy food. If at home people are more likely to remember what is good for them to eat, but while at work or in town, most of them will forget to check what is healthy to consume.

In this context this project aims at devising a portable system that supports healthy diet while also considering user preferences. The system considers daily recommended allowances of fat, sugar, cholesterol and calories as well as user dietary preferences and based on available menu makes the best suggestions in terms of healthy eating.

The devised system will be implemented in Java and will be deployed and tested on a PDA. The portable device will receive the menu from a server via wireless LAN. The menu will include with the meals' components their levels of fat, sugar, cholesterol and calories. This illustrates the possible usage of the proposed system in real-life restaurants or bars. The project can be extended later on to include shopping from supermarkets or small shops.

Relevance to Host Laboratory

This project continues our DCU laboratory research programme that involves proposing and devising solutions to improve people's daily life. Our research laboratory already has three IRCSET funded postgraduate students and one funded by industry, working on projects involving wireless communications. Various algorithms for intelligent selection of content or for quality-oriented delivery of content were proposed in the areas of multimedia networking and personalised e-learning.
