Along with many trips to big players in the computer industry, the Odysseus programme includes cultural and social excursions. Our most recent was a trip to Leinster House, where Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann sit. We met outside at three o' clock and made our way into the grounds, where we were greeted by a tour guide. The tour lasted roughly half an hour and took in many of the noteworthy aspects of the Oireachtas. First we visited the chamber in which governmental discussions take place and learned of the seating arrangements parliamentarians follow. The significance of the portraits of the Taoisigh around the walls was explained to us, along with their effect on the course of Irish history.
We were then led to where the Seanead sit and heard about how members are elected and what powers they have. The tour came to a close with a description of the portraits in they foyer, one of which was Ireland's current president, Mary McAleese. Although we were not allowed to take photographs within the main building, many group shots were taken in the grounds. An evening meal at Temple Bar's Ciao Bella Roma was our next port of call. On the way we stopped off for coffee to compliment our trip. After an enjoyable dinner, some of us maintained the gathering in an adjacent public house.
